Actor Naseeruddin Shah commenting on the controversy says he voiced his opinion as a worried citizen of the country.

The veteran actor got trolled online on Thursday after a video interview with Karwan-e-Mohabbat India surfaced on YouTube. In the interview, Shah said, that he has been worried about his children over communal issues in the country.

Reacting to the public backlash Naseeruddin told the media in Ajmer on Friday: “I don’t know why because what I said was from the point of view of a worried Indian, and I have said it before also. I don’t know this time what did I say to be labeled a traitor? It’s strange.”

The actor in the original interview said, ” “I worry about my children as they do not belong to any religion… I am worried about my children  since,  if a mob surrounds them and asks them ‘Are you a Hindu or Muslim’ they will have no answer. I worry because the situation does not seem to be improving anytime soon.”

When asked about Congress endorsing with his views, while BJP representatives call it a promotional stunt, Naseeruddin said: “Yes, they will say so. You have to tolerate  critisim . If they have the right to criticize, so do I. I am raising  a concern  about my nation, a nation I love and live in… I am talking about that and expressing my concern. So what wrong am I doing?”

Asked if he has ever faced any Hindu-Muslim clash, Naseeruddin, who is married to actress Ratna Pathak Shah, said: “No”.

Naseeruddin was last seen on screen in 2017’s Shakespearean adaption The Hungry which was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017.
